Last season, the Minnesota Vikings’ running game emerged as a glaring weak point in the offense. Characterized by inconsistency and premature abandonment in games, it failed to deliver the necessary impact. While Alexander Mattison and Ty Chandler remain under contract for the upcoming season, Mattison’s stint as a full-time starter fell short of expectations, and Chandler displayed only sporadic flashes of productivity.

In this article, we delve into three free agent options that could offer much-needed solutions for the Vikings’ running game heading into the next season.

Tony Pollard, Dallas Cowboys

First on our list is Tony Pollard. His breakout season with the Dallas Cowboys two years ago showcased his prowess, as he rushed for just over 1,000 yards on 193 attempts, tallying 9 touchdowns and averaging over 5 yards per carry. Paired with Ezekiel Elliott, Pollard formed a formidable one-two punch in the Cowboys’ backfield.

However, with Elliott’s departure, Pollard stepped into the RB1 role in Dallas, resulting in a substantial increase in workload. Despite this, in 2023, he amassed just over 1,000 yards on 252 attempts, with 6 touchdowns and slightly over 4 yards per carry—a slight dip in production from his breakout season. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that Pollard represents a significant upgrade over Mattison and Chandler.

Considering his potential impact, I would be in favor of signing Pollard to a three-year deal worth approximately $8 million per year. While he will turn 27 before the start of the next season, Pollard still boasts plenty of mileage left on his journey, making him a valuable addition to the Vikings’ backfield.

Projected stats with Vikings: 203 carries for 1,097 yards and 8 touchdowns

Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans

Derrick Henry helps Titans get back on track with rout of Bengals | Chattanooga Times Free Press

Picture this: Derrick Henry donning the purple and gold—a sight to behold for any Vikings fan. At 30 years old, he remains a standout running back in the league, capable of inflicting serious damage on opposing defenses. While he may not replicate his historic 2,000-yard rushing season, he still commands respect and forces defenses to adjust their game plans accordingly. Last year, he racked up just under 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns—a testament to his enduring talent and impact on the field.

However, convincing Henry to sign with the Vikings might prove to be a challenge. With his sights set on securing a championship ring, he’s likely to prioritize joining a contender such as Baltimore or Cincinnati. The uncertainty surrounding the Vikings’ “competitive rebuild” may further deter him from considering Minnesota as a potential destination.

Unless the Vikings are willing to shell out a hefty sum to secure Henry’s services—an outcome I’m not advocating for—he remains the least likely option on this list. While the allure of seeing Henry in purple and gold is undeniable, the practicalities of the situation suggest that it’s a long shot at best.

Projected stats with the Vikings: 288 carries for 1,456 yards and 13 touchdowns

Saquon Barkley, New York Giants

This could be a game-changing move for the Vikings. With Saquon Barkley’s future in the Big Apple appearing uncertain, Minnesota could capitalize on this opportunity. If the Vikings opt to part ways with Cousins, they may find themselves with the cap space to pursue Barkley—a formidable addition to complement either a bridge or rookie quarterback.

Despite concerns about his injury history, Barkley’s ability to single-handedly dominate a game is undeniable. Last season, he amassed just under 1,000 yards and 6 touchdowns. At 27 years old, Barkley still has plenty of gas left in the tank, making him a compelling option for a three-year contract worth $14 million per year.

Personally, I’m all in on Barkley. He tops my list of preferences for the Vikings, thanks to his dynamic playmaking abilities. It’s worth noting that Barkley’s impressive performances came despite playing behind subpar offensive lines in recent years. In Minnesota, he’ll have the luxury of running behind a stronger front, supported by the likes of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson—weapons that will undoubtedly draw attention away from Barkley and elevate the Vikings’ offense to new heights.
